Here are the latest pictures sent via Whatsap by our assistant manager Matindo Mulopo.
I am pleased to see Mrs. Uyleko, one of our recipients of cabbage and green bean seeds, was able to grow such a large crop.
This will feed her family and will provide some much needed income to purchase items not grown in her own garden.
Mrs. Uyleko will return interest seed in the form of 20 seeds she has grown or fallen tree seeds to replenish The Silozi Seed Bank and/or plant tree seeds in our Trees For Elephants, tree nursery.
Right now it is very difficult for our SEEDS managers to send pictures and reports as we do not have the funds for air time on phones or the Internet.
A volunteer Jeremy Stroud helped me pack up the seeds we have saved and I sent another batch on Jan.15, 2015 which were mostly winter squash ( Kabocha, Butternut), as that is what The Big Carrot is providing for us as we are in our winter season in Canada.
The winter squash are best planted in April in Zambia as the nights get cooler and squash do not like too much heat.
I also sent Uncle Lyn’s leaks and onion seeds that he donated and more pumpkin seeds. We also sent peach, avocado and nectarine pits donated by Deborah, a neighbour of mine.
My husband, Carl is on a 4/5 from teaching and off for 14 mths. He has built a tear drop trailer and has planned this trip for 4 years now. We are visiting friends in the southern USA and Baja Mexico.
I am presently in Oklahoma visiting my cousin whom I haven’t seen in 7 years and was able to get non-GMO white corn, okra and cucumber seed packages here now, unlike Canada where they are only available in the spring. I also picked up some fallen pecan seeds from my cousins tree so they will be sent with the next batch in April 2015.
Wish ya all well from Joanne in Oklahoma
